The right words to make everyone feel included.
Made with the LGBTQIA+ community, made for everyone.
Words make us feel seen and heard. Yet, the right ones tend to escape us, when addressing India’s LGBTQIA+ community.
Words of Pride is an attempt to bridge this gap in discourse with the right vocabulary. It is a lexicon of words that aims to make every individual in our society feel welcomed, included, appreciated, and most importantly respected. So, if you are from the community, it will help you confirm your identity with the right words and if you are an ally, it will help you address others better. Made with the community and a panel of linguists, it is currently available in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil. But this is just the beginning as we continue with our efforts to add more in the future.
The world is evolving; it’s time our words do too.
A sense of discomfort felt by individuals due to a mismatch between their true gender identity and the roles assigned at birth is called gender dysphoria.
Pronouns are how we identify ourselves apart from our name. It's how someone refers to the other person in a conversation – a simple way to affirm their identity.
Example - Can you apologise to Sharon from me? Tell her I’m sorry…

A group of passionate LGBTQIA+ linguists & language experts, scholars, influencers and change agents have created Words of Pride. It is a vocabulary of terms that helps people talk to and about India’s LGBTQIA+ community in an appropriate way.
Currently, it is available in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil. But our aim is to add more Indian languages over time. We are hoping that everyone in India will be seen and heard no matter their Sexual Orientation, Gender Identify & Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC).
